Finally a little sneak-peak behind the scenes of my American Portraits series. It's the very first in the series, and my technique has changed a bit since then, so I'll put up another .PSD file of a newer portrait sometime soon - but until then, here it is!
That's a shit - heap of curves You gotta be in the mood to do that much editing hey, i really admire you for putting that much effort into your images. Ohhh and also, if you keep everything visible besides the first vignetting layer, where it's a highlighted background rather than a darkened one....I reckon that looks awesome, mainly because of the contrast between his skin colour; it really draws your attention to his face. I also downloaded most of your psd files last night, and the one called 'Curiosity' is insane, you're a photoshop pro man. Did you get a power workshop or something? anyway, enough babble from me. Keep it up
Ah, Thats Amazing Lasse! ;D Really learned a lot from that! - Do you have any hints on how & where you should use quick mask - so you dont wind up with those ugly "painted" lines in your portrait?
- And, once again, thanks for all the inspiration I´ve been following you closely dude!
Hey hey.
Gah, i thought i was good on photoshop, but i've never even dabbled in curves let alone much of the other stuff you do with your pics.
How do you section off certain areas for editing?
Like all those curve layers you have, one of them is his cheeks, one his hat etc, how do you apply the settings to only one part of the image?

Oooh... Masks When you make a layer like Channel Mixer, Curves, Levels or so, it automatically creates a little, white box next to the icon in the window with your layers. Think of that box as a canvas - when white, it's all in use, when black, it's all blank. It starts out white, meaning that the entire picture is affected by the layer, but if you click on the little white canvas, select a black brush, and then start painting on it, you 'paint out' the effect of that layer. I usually just take a bucket with black, drop it on the picture so nothing in it is affected, and then select a white brush and start painting it back on where I think it fits
Wow, that makes it seem so much more complicated than it really is If it confused you more than it enlightened you, let me know and I'll try again
ahhhhhhhhh, clever.
It's ok. It did make sense!
I'll have to give it a go later! Thanks!
I still don't really 'get' the curves thing.
Guess it's all just practice.
I tend to do this kind of thing with photos: [link] (view the before pic too, there's a link to it underneath)
And i just haven't played with curves before.
Curves are a pretty big thing in Photoshop, though. And it's not really that hard to work with!
Basically, think of the line in Curves as your photo as it is now - top right being all the brightest areas in your photo, and the bottom left being all the darkest areas. If you click a little to the left of the center and drag it a bit downwards, and then click a little to the right of the center and drag that a bit up, you'll have increased the contrast! It's really only about playing around with it until you understand it... shouldn't be too hard Oh, and remember that there's an RGB-curve that controls the entire photo, and a Red, Green and Blue curve, that you can in/decrease the amount of that colour with.

...Have a good one mate!
No, most of the photoshop-stuff I know is self-taught. That's what you get for fiddling around with the program hours every night for a year
